Apple USA Authorizes Eleven U.S. Retailers
to Carry Macintosh Performa Line
Macintosh Performa To Be Sold In Nearly 2,000 Mass Merchandise,
Consumer Electronics and Office Products Superstore Outlets
Nationwide
NEW YORK, New York--September 14, 1992--The Apple USA division of
Apple Computer, Inc. today announced the authorization of eleven
major U.S. consumer retail chains to carry the full line of Apple
Macintosh Performa computers and peripherals.
Launched today in New York, the Macintosh Performa line will be sold
in approximately 2,000 locations nationwide by the following: Sears,
Montgomery Ward, Circuit City, Dayton Hudson, Lechmere, Silo, Office
Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Tops, and Incredible Universe.
The Macintosh Performa 200 and Macintosh Performa 400 models, as well
as complementary peripherals are available immediately; the Macintosh
Performa 600 and Macintosh Performa 600 CD will become available
through these outlets in October, 1992. Today's announced
authorizations for the Macintosh Performa line follow a 56 location
U.S. distribution pilot with Sears, Silo, Office Depot and OfficeMax.
Designed as a total solution for first-time buyers, all Macintosh
Performa CPUs will be customized to include an enhanced version of
System 7 software as well as a variety of applications software to be
specified by the retailer. In addition, all Macintosh Performa CPUs
will include one year of Apple-direct toll-free telephone support and
in-home service.
Suggested retail pricing and financing options for Macintosh Performa
will be set individually by retailer.
"Typically first-time buyers, especially families that are spending
their own dollars, have purchase requirements that make them unique,"
said Keith Fox, Apple USA's vice president and general manager for
Consumer Markets. "Among other things, these customers want a
computer that's easy to use and easy to buy. Our data from the
pilot program has indicated that over 70% of mass merchandise
customers have never shopped in a computer specialty store."
Macintosh Performa represents a total solution specifically designed
for this customer set, incorporating the full power of Macintosh with
enhanced system software, bundled applications, service and support -
- all offered where these customers shop. This will be the first
time that Apple products will be widely available in consumer-
oriented outlets.
"It is our goal with Performa to reach new users and complement
Apple's current product and distribution strategy in the business
arena. Experienced computer users, business users and those who
require complex solutions will continue to rely on Apple's authorized
reseller network for the largest selection of Macintosh solutions for
a range of business needs," said Fox.
The entire Macintosh Performa product line, two Macintosh Performa
display options--the Performa Display and Performa Display Plus-- and
the Apple StyleWriter and Apple Personal LaserWriter LS will be
available through a consumer-oriented distribution channel.
Apple Computer, Inc. is a leading supplier of computers to consumer,
education, business and government markets in the U.S. and a
